Nestled in Kyoto’s historic Uzumasa district, Toei Kyoto Studios stands as a testament to Japan’s rich cinematic heritage. Established in 1926 by renowned actor Bando Tsumasaburo, the studio began as Bantsuma Productions, crafting captivating samurai films that enthralled audiences nationwide.
Over the decades, the studio underwent several transformations, reflecting the dynamic evolution of the Japanese film industry. In 1951, it became part of Toei Company, Ltd., marking a new era of prolific filmmaking. Under Toei’s banner, the studio produced iconic masterpieces such as “MIYAMOTO MUSASHI” (1961) and “BATTLES WITHOUT HONOR AND HUMANITY” (1973), solidifying its reputation for excellence in samurai cinema.
Toei Kyoto Studios has also contributed to internationally acclaimed projects such as “MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA”, “TORA! TORA! TORA!”, “SUNNY”, and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s celebrated drama “THE MAKANAI: COOKING FOR THE MAIKO HOUSE”. The studio has played a key role in shaping Japan’s film industry, launching the careers of legendary actors like Hiroyuki Sanada and Sonny Chiba, who began their journeys here.
With Toei celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2026, and the studio’s centennial in 2026, Toei Kyoto Studios enters a new era of modern filmmaking including multiple genres and a planned expansion and renewal which promises to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike around the world.
